The Second International Theology of the Body Symposium will be held on the weekend of the Feast of Corpus Christi, in anticipation of the thirtieth anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to Ireland. 2009 also marks thirty years since the first Papal Audience on the Theology of The Body.

Theme

"Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it." Luke 17:33

Purpose

This Symposium on the Theology of the Body aims at exploring ever deeper the goodness, truth and beauty of the Divine plan for human love. We wish this event to be an opportunity for a deepening of personal faith and self-understanding that will inspire greater participation in the New Evangelisation. Further, the Symposium will facilitate the bringing together of people from many countries and cultures to discuss the Theology of the Body. It is our hope that this encounter will foster and develop prosperous networks to assist participants with their own evangelisation initiatives.

For this undertaking we ask for the intercession of Saints Joseph and Patrick. We offer it as a prayer of thanksgiving for the life of Pope John Paul II. In all things we entrust ourselves to Our Lady the Immaculate Conception, "Totus Tuus".

The Event

The 1st International Theology of the Body Symposium, held in Gaming, Austria, in 2007, brought together scholars and popular presenters and invited them to engage in a fruitful dialogue on the many approaches to this broad topic. This 2nd Symposium will present the Theology of the Body itself as a unified whole, approaching it from spiritual, theological, philosophical, anthropological, and ethical perspectives. The Speakers are invited to present individual sections of the work each according to their own expertise. These core talks are complemented by talks placing the Theology of the Body in its historical-cultural, political and medical context. Considering that the Theology of the Body is a pedagogy of the body, all the Speakers will seek to ground the more theological and philosophical reflections in experience, and will touch upon practical ways of teaching the Theology of the Body. The talks will be given in a language that is broadly accessible, that is, not accessible to scholars alone.
